Buckland Zip Codes

Living in 01338

In Buckland the Zip Code for the Town is 01338.  Depending on where residents live in town they may use Shelburne Falls, 01370; Charlemont, 01339; or Ashfield, 01330 as their mailing address.  The use of these additional zip codes is simply for use as a mailing address however it does cause some confusion.  Most of the individuals with a Shelburne Falls mailing address also live within the Village of Shelburne Falls.  This village designation is simply a geographic, cultural area and community that spans across two towns: Buckland and Shelburne. It is not a separate municipality with its own government.  The village encompasses both sides of the Deerfield river, with the western side being Buckland and the eastern side being Shelburne.

The use of multiple zip codes does cause some trouble for residents and the town alike.  To prevent misdirected information, mail, services, etc, please keep in mind that if you are filing any paperwork through a government agency you may need to use Buckland, MA 01338, even if you do not use this as your mailing address.  Please read instructions carefully.  If you are ever required to provide your physical or residential address this should normally be Buckland.  Much of the rest of the time your mailing address is used. If it is ever unclear which address is required you may want to check with the agency.  Some examples where your physical address would be needed include:

  • Birth, death and marriage paperwork filed
  • Voter registration
  • RMV license and registration

Changing to one Zip Code?

There is not a day that goes by that we don’t have to solve a problem or help a resident because of the use of multiple zip codes in town.  Currently there is a a team investigating the benefits of potentially consolidating to one Zip Code.

Right now we are in a discovery phase trying to determine the depth and the breadth of issues that arise because of the multiple zip codes and what impact the issues have on the residents of Buckland and the town as a whole.  We also want to gather feedback from residents to understand additional issues we haven’t considered, understand their concerns, and try to determine how many people in town this impacts.  If a change does occur we are trying to understand the implications of a change as best we can so that we can support residents through the change.  What happens if we do not do this change?  We continue on how we currently are.

Please email us at zipcode@town.buckland.ma.us to give feedback on the problems you have encountered because of the multiple Zip Codes, and with questions or concerns. Or take a brief survey!
